"The Ultimate Guide: Calculating Your Points for Japan's Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) Visa & PR"(For researcher, scientists and scholars )

If you have “70 point or more” or “80 points or more”, you could apply for Permanent Residence in Japan without living in Japan for 10 years or more. If you have 70 points or more and keep the score for 3 years, you could apply for PR with 3 years residence in Japan. If you have 80 points or more, you could apply for PR with 1 year residence in Japan.

But you might wonder how to calculate my score. Sometimes, it’s a little bit difficult to find the calculation sheet for point calculation. In this article, I’ll explain how to calculate your score by showing the point calculation sheets for researcher, scientists and professors.

Here is the point calculation sheet for Advanced Academic Research Activity. This is the point calculation sheet for those work on academic research filed like researcher, scientists and professors. To calculate your score, you should use this sheet to calculate.

I’ll also explain what you need to careful when you check whether you could claim score.

1. Academic Background

You need to check your degree certificate to find how much point you could claim.

 Bachelor’s degree and equivalent

You might wonder what kinds of degree is equivalent to the bachelor’s degree issued from the university. As of now, the Immigration Services Agency doesn’t publish detailed guideline regarding this matter. However, it appeared that they don’t determine whether your education is equivalent to undergraduate education by simply seeing how may years you spent on the educational program.

2. Professional Career

You must calculate your score by checking your work experience. You need to note that you could claim your work experience only if it’s related to research, research guide or education which you engage in Japan.

For example, if you worked as a scientist for a university, you couldn’t claim your work experience as interpreter while you were in your home country.

And you can’t include the period for the study at a university or graduate school as professional career. And you can’t include part time job experience while you were a student of a educational institute even if it’s related to the fied you engage in now.

3. Annual Salary (年収) 💰

When you check your salary, you need to know that the Immigration Services Agency define the salary as reward for work. So, you can’t include the subsidy from your employer like housing subsidy since the subsidy is not generally considered as “reward for work”.

When you calculate your score for current year, you must calculate this score by checking how much income you will earn for next 1 year. So, you can’t include salary for overtime work and bonus if the amount of these salary is not fixed.

But when you calculate your score for past years (like calculating the score for 1 year ago from the date of application for the person who currently have 80points and plan to apply for PR), you could calculate your score by checking the actual amount you received as salary. So, you could include bonus and salary for over time work.

Would you like me to provide the English translation for the Age criteria using the original table format as well, or should I proceed with the other sections?

4. Age

You must check your residence card to check your age.

5. Research Achievements

Patents

Patents have to be granted by the authority. So, you can’t claim the point if the authority just published your patents.

And you also need to own the patent and be an inventor regarding the patent. So, even if your invention is patented, you can’t claim the points if the patent is owned by your employer.

Academic Papers

To claim the points, you need to be corresponding author for your academic papers. The Immigration officers generally use SciVerse Scopus to check academic papers.

And you also need to note that the inspection code states the author written at first on the author section is the corresponding author. If your name is not listed at first, it’s better to submit the proof that you are the corresponding author.
